Senior adults are susceptible to skin problems as they age. They must give careful consideration to their thinning and dryer skin. For most seniors, physical damage to their skin can be quite dangerous as their skin will heal slower than younger adults. Skin cancer and other diseases are quite common in senior adults and must be screened for on a regular basis.

The purpose of your annual physical is to diagnose issues that you may have before they become serious. When caught early on, most illnesses can be effectively dealt with so that they do not cause long term complications for a healthy lifestyle.
During your annual physical, your doctor needs to get an accurate sense of your current state of health. This is typically done by performing the following checks of your vital signs:
- Blood pressure level (normal is considered 120 / 80)
- Heart rate (normal resting rate is 60 – 100 beats per minute)
- Breathing levels / ability (normal respiratory rate is 12 – 16 breaths per minute)
- Cholesterol level check (optimal LDL cholesterol level is less than 120; optimal HDL is above 60)
Your doctor will also pay close attention to the things you tell them; for example, are you experiencing excessive indicators in your life, such as fatigue, headaches, pain, discomfort or other similar symptoms. Diagnosing problems and heading off trouble is one of the main jobs of your doctor.
For men, an annual exam may include a testicular exam to check for tenderness or lumps. Also, a prostate exam may be necessary to feel for suspect areas or abnormal size.
For women, the annual exam typically includes a breast exam to check for lumps. Furthermore, a thorough pelvic exam and pap smear may be necessary to accurately assess your health.
Aspects of a Routine Checkup
In order to maintain your health, it’s important to get routine checkups, especially if you are prone to illness. They are not only ideal for preventative measures, but they are also helpful at pointing out problems so you can get immediate attention before it gets worse. Some aspects of a routine checkup are pretty consistent, while others are determined by how you feel at the time and other individual factors.
Your Medical History:
Before any physical examination is done, your doctor will ask you about your medical history. This gives the doctor a better insight as to why you may be experiencing problems or it may help the doctor better understand the results of your physical exam once it’s completed. It is also a vital way to pinpoint risk factors for various illnesses and may factor into which additional tests your doctor may want to run during your examination. Some of the medical history questions will most likely be related to your:
- Diet and exercise
- Alcohol and tobacco use
- Family history of diseases, such as cancers like breast, bowel, prostate and melanoma
- Diabetes, asthma, glaucoma, gout, heart attack etc.
- And any symptoms you may be experiencing
The Physical Exam:
The actual physical exam shouldn’t take long, but it should cover all the necessary steps including: looking at your skin, listening to your heart and lungs for abnormalities, checking your height, weight and blood pressure. In addition to the previous steps, a more thorough examination should also include an examination of your mouth, ears, lymph nodes, thyroid, rectum and abdomen. Make sure to let your doctor know if you have any areas that you would like for the doctor to check specifically.
Once the physical exam is done, your doctor will explain any findings and what actions you should take to improve or maintain your health. If you have any questions regarding the medical history, physical exam or analysis, you should ask the doctor at this time. The analysis will help you get a better idea of how often you may need to have routine checkups and what additional lab tests you may need to have to ensure your body is healthy.
Additional testing may not be a part of everyone’s routine exam. Recommendations for additional testing is usually based on factors during an individual’s medical history, family history, physical exam, or may be a result of guidelines set by esteemed research organizations. These occasional lab tests may include:
- mammography and pap smears
- tests for diabetes, sexually transmitted diseases, tuberculosis or prostate cancer
- screening of your heart, liver, kidney, blood and urine
Routine checkups should begin early in life and even if they are an out-of-pocket expense, it is worth it to get it done. Nothing is more important than your health and making sure your body is functioning properly, so don’t wait until you have health concern to visit your doctor.
